Solid bowl centrifuge
The solid bowl centrifuge is a type of mineral handling centrifuge used for the separation of solids and liquids in the mining industry. The centrifuge is used to split sludge of two materials of different densities by using continuous rotational force. Solid bowl centrifuges technology can be utilised for cost effective solid liquid separating in areas such as residue dewatering and fine coal recovery. In what way does a solid bowl centrifuge work?
A solid bowl centrifuge (SBC) has a horizontal centrifuge rotor which contains a conveyor belt, which is collectively known as the rotating assembly. This assembly rotates at high speed on its own axis, producing a high centrifugal force that allows solids to be segregated from the liquid. The slurry arrives at the rotor via a stationary feed pipe. The separable solids are pulled out by the conveyor belt in the form of dried cake, while at the other end, the clear liquid (centrate) flows over the thrust plates.
What is it used for?
A solid bowl centrifuge is a sort of centrifuge that uses the sedimentation principle. The centrifuge is used for separating a blend that consists out of two materials with different densities by making use of the centrifugal power that results from continual rotation. It is usually used for separating solid-liquid, liquid-liquid, and solid-solid blends. Solid bowl centrifuges are used on a large scale in various industry applications, including wastewater treatment, charcoal production and polymer production. An advantage of solid bowl centrifuges used for industrial purposes is their ease of set-up compared with other centrifuges. There are three design types of fixed bowl centrifuges, namely conical, cylindrical and conical-cylindrical.
There are a few different solid bowl centrifuges with different shapes.
Conical solid bowl centrifuge: Of the three designs, the conical bowl design was initially preferred for its maximum water removal and excellent classifying power. Although, this design is not as effective in reaching a high centre quality, therefore it is a poor clarifier.
Cylindrical solid bowl centrifuge: In contrast to conical bowl design, cylindrical bowl design does not enable maximum water drainage, and so produces mainly wet cakes. Furthermore, it is a less effective classifier. However, the design of the cylindrical bowl is more effective in achieving high centre quality compared to the design of the conical bowl, making it a better dewatering device than the design of the conical bowl.
Conical-cylindrical solid bowl centrifuge: The conical-cylindrical bowl design was developed on the basis of the conical and cylindrical bowl designs. In fact, this design combines the best individual features of the two previous designs, and therefore is a more advanced design. This specific design enables efficient dewatering, efficient clarification and a rather good classification all within one unit. It has the possibility to modify and monitor the water removal and centrate quality balance by adjusting the length of the basin, depending on the product required. The conical-cylindrical bowl design is therefore the most commonly used in the industry today.
